The Curse of the 3 Strikes Again…

Wow, what a tough week in Hollywood and for all those who grew up watching and listening to them: three icons gone before you could blink. And how sad is it that all three were going through some of the toughest times in their lives when they passed?

First Ed McMahon, he of the TONIGHT SHOW 2nd chair, STAR SEARCH and TV’s PRACTICAL JOKES AND BLOOPERS, passed at the age of 86.  It appears that the bone cancer he had been suffering, among other health problems, may have contributed to his death.  (No doubt the added stress of being in financial trouble and on the verge of losing his home didn’t help…  Too bad he couldn’t have been enjoying his golden years instead of having to hawk Cash for Gold to make ends meet!)

Then, just when we were getting used to his being gone, Farrah Fawcett loses her battle with cancer at 62.  (How weird is it that all of the original Angels ended up with cancer? I’d seriously want to check out where they were filming for nuclear waste products!!)

While I actually liked Jacklyn Smith the best of the three original Charlie’s Angels, the chemistry of the three leads together made for a fun show. Unfortunately, like many actors who leave successful shows before the storyline is really ready to let them go, Farrah’s career never really ever took off again. She ended up being known more for the men in her life and the best-selling (cheesecake) poster of all time and now for dying of a really embarrasing form of lower body cancer.  How sad is that?

Then, before we all stop reeling, the biggest shock of the week happens.  Ed McMahon was getting up there in years and Farrah had been battling cancer for a while, but Michael Jackson always seemed to go on and on no matter what bumps and bruises tossed his life.  Then, he gets accidentally done in at only 50 by the doctor that’s supposed to be watching his fragile health? (That’s just one of the many rumors running rampant right now…  Among the thousands that no doubt will spring up and grow and take on a life of their own as the days, weeks and months go by.)

I’m sorry to say I don’t really miss this Michael much.  I miss the Michael of the earlier years, the one who hadn’t gotten twisted so much by either his father or all the money or just finally being unable to cope with all the fame and pressure. I miss the originality of his early music, the magic he seemed to have lost as he lost his own way, personally and financially, not quite seeming to live in the real world anymore.  It’s too bad that it looked all downhill for him, no matter what he did.

RIP to all three. May they now have the peace and tranquility they seemed to have lost so late in their lives…

What a week…

Paul Giamatti as John Adams (HBO)

Paul Giamatti as John Adams (HBO)

With 23 nominations, including Paul Giamatti’s nod as Lead Actor in a Mini-Series, HBO’s JOHN ADAMS mini-series was the overall frontrunner in 2008’s Emmy Awards announcements.

In a new twist, 2 basic cable shows, MAD MEN and DAMAGES, also managed to achieve Best Series nominations, something basic cable programs had never managed to do until now.

Here are just some of the 2008 nominees (with the ones I’d like to see win in red):

HEROES – Season 3 Spoilers

HEROES - Yaeko played by Eriko TamuraIn an interview she did with Sci Fi Wire, Eriko Tamura, the Japanese actress who plays Hiro’s love interest from the 17th century, gave away a few possible spoilers for the upcoming season which should begin production in May now that the writers’ strike is over.

According to Tamura, her character, Yaeko, was supposed to be transported to the present in episodes that had been started before the writers’ strike commenced last fall but which still needed finishing touches. “I am going to be in the present, yes,” Tamura said in an interview.

“I actually had a few episodes of the script then,” Tamura said, adding: “Suddenly, the strike happened, so we had to stop the shooting. We are not to that point where they think about the storylines yet … because of the strike.”

So no definite word on how her character will interact with Hiro (Masi Oka) and/or Adam aka Takezo Kensei (David Anders) when Yaeko arrives in the 21st century…

According to the interview with Sci Fi Wire, HEROES Season 3 will be back starting Fall 2008.

Happy Birthday to Andrea Parker!

Andrea Parker - THE PRETENDER Andrea Parker, star of THE PRETENDER, E.R., JAG and LESS THAN PERFECT, turns either 38 or 39 today depending on the source you use. (LOL) According to IMDb.com she was born in 1970, but according to Wikipedia, it’s 1969. Hmmmm.

Here’s hoping that she’ll take part in the new ‘digital’ version of THE PRETENDER when they finally get around to working on it again… It just wouldn’t be the same without ‘Miss Parker’ in more ways than one.

In the meantime, here’s hoping she has a very happy day and coming year!

A Little Counter-Productive, Hmmm?

I keep seeing Drew Barrymore in her latest Cover Girl TruBlend makeup commercials, and all I can think when I see them is: if you’re going to ask me “is my makeup showing?” and then try to sell me makeup that “blends seamlessly” and looks natural, could you not put a shade on Drew that makes it look like she’s wearing a very bad tan mask?

LOST – Sayid Takes Center Stage

February 14, 2008 by Spotlight-on WM

naveenandrews.jpgTonight’s episode was great – Naveen Andrews’ character Sayid got lots of screen time, something I always appreciate. (I’ve been a big fan of Andrews’ acting since THE ENGLISH PATIENT.) And boy, does he look equally good in a tux as he does a muscle T! (Hopefully that isn’t giving too much away… LOL)

For a show that’s supposed to be ‘answering all your questions’ before they go off the air, I swear they just keep adding more to the mix. (Maybe that’s the producers’ way of trying to get the show some more time. OK, wishful thinking, I know.)

BTW, am I the only one to notice that Oceanic Flight 815 had way more than its share of great looking men on board than on any flight I’ve ever taken? Jack, Sawyer, Sayid, Charlie, Jin, Michael, and Eko (not to mention Desmond already on the island…) I wonder – were they trying to hint that if you see a bunch of gorgeous looking guys boarding your flight, skip it as it will probably crash on a mysterious island? LOL

Off to go rewatch tonight’s ep to see what little nuances I may have missed the first time through.

BATTLESTAR GALACTICA – They’ve Finally Set a Date!

February 9, 2008 by Spotlight-on WM
Filed under Battlestar Galactica, TV SHOWS

bsg26.jpgI was watching the latest STARGATE ATLANTIS tonight when I caught the newest BATTLESTAR GALACTICA commercial. This time, instead of just having the usual sound bites by a few of the characters plus a note about “coming in March” they finally added the premiere date (at least for SCI FI Channel on Dish Network): April 4th! The official website is still saying “coming in March”. Hmmmm… Someone at the website isn’t keeping up with the advertisers!

Guess I’m going to have to add it to all the calendars in the house so I can make sure I don’t miss the first episode of the final season. (I HATE falling behind, especially when I’ve been waiting this long for the new stuff!)

I just hope they’re not going to split the ’season’ into 2 chunks as has been rumored, with only 10 episodes in 2008 and then dragging out the last half of 10 into 2009. That would really bite. It’s not like Sci Fi Channel’s ‘original’ movies make up for the delay! (I mean, really, how many fake snakes and bats can one person take?)
Battlestar Galactica Series 2 Action Figure Case
Maybe they expect us to order the Battlestar Galactica Series 2 Dolls and make up our own adventures for the duration, eh? LOL
