And The Oscar Goes To…

NO COUNTRY FOR OLD MEN In what I thought was an interesting twist, the 80th Annual Best Picture Oscar went to the movie featuring the Best Supporting Actor instead of the picture with the Best Actor. In fact, none of the lead actors of the Best Picture were nominated for their roles in it… (Tommy Lee Jones was nominated for a Best Actor, but for a different movie.)

NO COUNTRY FOR OLD MEN took home 4 awards (Best Picture, Best Direction, Best Writing – Adapted Screenplay, and Best Actor in a Supporting Role) making it the “winningest” movie of the year. It appears Javier Bardem’s performance helped push the movie to the top over THERE WILL BE BLOOD (Best Actor in a Lead Role, Best Cinematography).

An interesting note: all 4 major acting awards went to European actors this year: Daniel Day-Lewis (UK), Marion Cotillard (France), Javier Bardem (Spain), and Tilda Swinton (UK).

An another surprise came when Cate Blanchett got aced out of both the Actress in a Lead Role and Actress in a Supporting Role Oscars. She was only the 11th person to be nominated in both categories in the same year, with no one ever managing to grab both. Just like when 2 actors in the same movie getting nominated in the same category tend to cancel each out, getting nominated in 2 categories seems to do the same thing for the actor or actress in question…

Here’s how the major awards worked out:
